apple treeYou are invited to a FREE fruit tree pruning workshop at Bethel Church Community Garden (201 E Old Plank Rd.) February 19 at 4 pm. Come learn from Jim Quinn, MU Extension horticulturist about how to get the most out of your fruit trees with pruning.

No RSVP or registration required. In case of bad weather, the back-up date is Feb 22.

Learn to Preserve Your Harvest

photo by Fir0002, Creative CommonsFood preservation season is approaching! Very Massey with MU Extension will be offering three classes covering a variety of food preservation methods. All will be held at the Boone County University Extension Center on Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

  • July 1: Freezing & Drying Fruits and Vegetables
  • July 8: Water Bath Canning—Jams/Jellies, Fruits, Tomatoes, Salsas and Pickles
  • July 15: Pressure Canning Vegetables, Tomatoes and Soups

World Refugee Day Event June 27

World Refugee Day ImageMark your calendar for June 27, 2015 and join Refugee and Immigration Services at 2601 W. Broadway, Broadway Christian Church, from 6 to 9 p.m. for a celebration like no other. Celebrate the courage and strength of millions of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict or violence.

At World Refugee Day, individuals, organizations and agencies will unite to celebrate culture and diversity in our community. There will be an international potluck, games, crafts, entertainment and the opportunity to meet people in the Columbia community and appreciate cultures from all over the world. Stop by to relax, make new connections and sample international cuisine.

The Broadway Christian Church garden hosts a large number of refugee and immigrant gardeners who are a vibrant part of the garden community there. The Community Garden Coalition is pleased to be able to help support this gardenm and we encourage community gardeners to visit this event and meet some fellow gardeners.

Warm Season Plants Friday and Saturday

tomato-Manjith KainickaraWarm season plants and sweet potato slips will be offered to gardeners from member gardens THIS WEEKEND!!

CGC will distribute tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet), eggplant and sweet potato slips this weekend. We also still have lots of row cover available, and some hoops, for which we are asking 25¢/foot.

Come pick up some plants at the Claudell Lane Garden:
Friday, May 22 from 5-7:30 p.m. or
Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Payment is not required, but we encourage voluntary donations to help offset our costs and allow us to continue to serve even those who cannot afford to donate.

Spring Thaw is open to all current or would-be community gardeners. If you are seeking a plot to grow some veggies you’ll want to attend. You’ll be able to enroll for land in one of our 12 neighborhood gardens, pick up free vegetable seeds, and gather helpful information while munching on potluck snacks.

Community gardening is completely free. Supported by grants from the City of Columbia and Boone County, and many generous donations, the Community Garden Coalition has been offering residents of Columbia and Boone County free land, seeds, plants, tools, materials, and gardening help for over 30 years.
