This weekend’s Edible Columbia tour offers a chance to visit some community gardens, an urban farm and other local food projects. The tour happens Sunday September 16 from 2-5 p.m. For the cost of a small donation, you’ll also get dinner at Comedor Popular.

Fall Gardening Workshop
Despite the relentless heat and drought, autumn will surely come to Mid-Missouri eventually, and it might be a great year to try a fall garden. Come get some free advice on Fall Gardening, at a discussion led by Bill McKelvey, president of the Community Garden Coalition. Bill has been a fall gardener for many years and will share some ideas for growing a host of cool season vegetables in the fall and early winter.

City Asks for Limiting Water Use Tonight
The City of Columbia has asked residents to limit watering until 6 a.m. Saturday, July 7 because of an unexpected repair at the water treatment plant. Gardeners should try to hold off on watering if possible until then.

Straw Mulch for Community Gardeners
Straw mulch is now available for Community Garden Coalition gardeners at the Ash Street Garden. Stop by the garden at 201 West Ash Street and pick up a bale of straw mulch for your plot. Straw mulch has many benefits for your garden, including weed suppression, moisture retention, and shading the soil from the hot summer sun. It is also reusable! Spread it over your garden in the fall to keep the soil covered through the winter, then use it again next year.

Learn About Raised Beds & Fall Gardening
Two Garden Walk and Talk events are coming up to discuss a variety of vegetable gardening topics.
The first Walk and Talk will be held at the garden of James Quinn, MU Extension regional horticulture specialist. James will give us a tour of his garden and discuss different Raised Bed and Intensive Gardening Techniques, which are ideal for community gardens. He grows a wide variety of vegetables and fruit and will also be able to talk about various pest and disease issues.

Take a Cruise Through Community Gardens
The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture and the Community Garden Coalition present the 2012 Garden Cruise! Hop on your bikes and cruise around central Columbia checking out some of Columbia’s community gardens. Walkers and drivers are also welcome.
The tour is on Saturday, June 30 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will start with a light breakfast at the Circus Lyon Garden, 603 Lyon Street, and end at the CCUA Urban Farm, at Smith and Fay streets.
